Bacteriologists are more likely to regard it as an illusion of wellbeing.
In everyday life, a 40-degree wash seems like a sensible compromise: laundry smells fresh, feels soft and keeps electricity costs down. Yet this routine conceals an issue that cannot be seen - or smelled. Specialists in bacteriology and allergies warn that washing bedding mainly at 40 degrees leaves mites and germs largely behind in the fabric.
What 40 degrees in the washing machine actually achieves
In many homes, bedding is washed on a standard or Eco cycle at 40 degrees. Washing machines are designed for this, as are detergents. At first glance, everything appears right: stains disappear, the scent is pleasant and the sheets look clean.
A recent study using enzyme-containing detergent even found that, in an average healthy household, washing at 40 degrees can remove up to 99 per cent of the bacteria tested. That sounds impressive - but only when one part of the issue is considered.
The lasting burden in a bed is actually house dust mites and their droppings. The creatures themselves are tiny, live deep within the fabric and feed on flakes of skin. This exact mix of sweat, oils, skin debris and dust ends up in our sheets night after night.

Specialists do not advise washing all bedding hot at all times as a matter of course. Used selectively, however, the higher temperature brings clear benefits. A 60-degree wash is particularly useful in these circumstances:
- Acute infections in the household: after stomach bugs, flu or contagious skin conditions.
- Mite allergy: at least once a month for the affected person’s bedding.
- Heavy soiling: blood, urine, vomit or other biological stains.
- Older people or those who sweat heavily: particularly high levels of residue accumulate in their beds.
For these loads, experts recommend a conventional cycle such as “hot wash”, “cotton” or “bedding” at 60 degrees, with a sufficiently long running time. The drum should not be packed to the brim, so that water and detergent can reach every fibre.
How often should bed sheets actually go in the washing machine?
Many people change their bedding by instinct, often every two or three weeks. Different guide values apply to an average, healthy family:

What mites really like - and how to spoil their comfort
House dust mites are not exotic monsters, but perfectly ordinary cohabitants. They thrive when three conditions come together:
- a warm environment similar to body temperature
- high humidity
- plenty of shed skin as food
These factors can be influenced in the bedroom. Regular ventilation, avoiding a permanently very high room temperature, not drying wet laundry in the bedroom and using bedding that is not overly thick all reduce moisture in the bed. Combined with the right washing routine, this gradually creates a less appealing environment for these small arachnids.
People who react strongly can also choose mite-proof covers for mattresses and pillows. These “encasings” prevent mites and allergens from escaping in the first place. They should be washed at 60 degrees at least once or twice a year, while ordinary covers on top should be cleaned much more frequently.
Balancing hygiene, energy and everyday life
Many people hesitate to use 60 degrees because they are concerned about electricity bills or the lifespan of textiles. Modern washing machines and detergents handle these temperatures far more gently than they did in the past. A sensible middle ground could look like this:
- Change bedding every 7–10 days.
- Everyday washing: a 40-degree cycle with a long programme and good detergent.
- Once a month: 60 degrees for the most frequently used sheets and pillowcases.
- During illness or allergy flare-ups: consistently wash at 60 degrees.
People who adapt their own habits often notice a difference after only a few weeks: less sneezing in the morning, less of a scratchy throat and fewer musty smells in the bedroom. The bacteriologists’ central message is therefore matter-of-fact, but it has consequences for daily life: what feels clean is different from what looks clean under a microscope.
