Viana do Castelo Council has awarded contracts for improvement works at six municipal swimming pools and sports halls, aimed at boosting energy efficiency. The overall investment totals approximately €1.9 million.

Overall investment and locations

The projects cover the Atlântico and Frederico Pinheiro municipal swimming pools in the urban area, as well as the Barroselas municipal pool. Work has also been commissioned for the David Freitas sports hall in Afife, the Santa Maria Maior sports hall in the city, and the Nicolau Veríssimo sports hall in Meadela.

Energy-efficiency works at the municipal swimming pools

According to the local authority, the scheme at the Atlântico Municipal Swimming Pool-worth €368,000 and scheduled to run for six months-includes "work to replace the roof and the ceramic floor finishes in the public changing rooms". It also covers "the installation of supporting heat pumps, space heating and the installation of a solar photovoltaic system for self-consumption".

At the Barroselas Municipal Swimming Pool, the same types of equipment will be installed. In addition, the roof and the ceramic finishes on the poolside deck and changing rooms will be replaced. The works also include connecting the site to the natural gas network and refurbishing toilets and changing facilities designed for reduced mobility users. This project represents an investment of around half a million euros and has a six-month delivery period.

A similar intervention, with a comparable price tag of about €540,000, is planned for the Frederico Pinheiro Municipal Swimming Pool. Here, "a survey was carried out of the works needed to replace the roof and the water network for the tanks, thereby providing better conditions of use for users, and savings in energy and water consumption". The contract also includes fitting heat pumps, space heating, and a hybrid solar system for self-consumption.

Upgrades to the municipal sports halls

As for the sports halls, works have been awarded to the value of €400,000, with an execution period of nine months. The scope includes replacing equipment such as lighting projectors, waterproofing membranes, thermal insulation, flashings and gutters, as well as treating the playing-area floor, renewing ventilation and heating systems, and implementing a solar thermal system. In the case of the Nicolau Veríssimo sports hall, the plans also include installing a retractable seating system.
