When the first mild days arrive, your heating can suddenly feel completely unnecessary. Yet spring weather is changeable, and it’s precisely during this in-between period that the biggest energy and comfort mistakes happen. If you switch your heating off too early and too aggressively, you invite chilly nights, higher costs and avoidable hassle with the system.
Why abruptly turning the heating off can backfire
The calendar may say spring, but the thermometer doesn’t agree every day. It’s common to have afternoons of 16–18 °C followed by nights around 5 °C or even lower. Many people get carried away by a bright, sunny day and turn the heating right down.

Reduce gradually rather than hitting “off”

If you get cold quickly, you don’t need to force yourself to sit in an 18 °C living room just because a generic energy-saving tip says so. It’s more useful to understand your comfort range and heat as efficiently as possible within it.

- Young family in a poorly insulated older home: Living areas at 20 °C in the day, 17 °C at night. Keep children’s rooms slightly warmer. Don’t switch the heating off completely-reduce it in steps.
- Couple in a well-insulated new build: Drop to 19 °C early in the year, shorten heating periods on sunny days, and potentially leave some rooms unheated.
- Single person working from home: Keep the home office comfortably warm, heat rarely used rooms only minimally, and programme thermostats consistently.

Risks of rooms being too cold during the shoulder season
