How to Remove Pen Stains from Light-Coloured Clothes with a Home Remedy

Pen stains on light-coloured clothing often happen without warning, whether at work, school or home. Using a few straightforward ingredients that are usually already in the house, it is possible to limit the damage and even remove the ink completely, provided you stay calm, follow a few essential steps and take the fabric’s properties into account.

How does the home remedy to remove pen stains work?

The most widely used home remedy combines two everyday ingredients: rubbing alcohol (or runny alcohol gel) and mild washing-up liquid. The alcohol helps dissolve the ink, while the detergent makes it easier to lift residue trapped within the fibres.

To make the mixture, combine one part alcohol with one part mild washing-up liquid in a small container, creating a slightly thick solution. With more delicate fabrics, always test it on an inconspicuous area before treating the stain.

Watch a video on Talita Cavalcante’s YouTube channel featuring three definitive tips that use quick mixtures to loosen ballpoint pen ink from different fabrics without damaging the fibres:

What should you do in the first few minutes after an ink stain?

The first minutes after the pen touches the fabric are crucial for preventing the mark from spreading. Rather than rubbing the area, blot up excess ink gently with kitchen paper or a clean white cloth.

Once the excess has been removed, lay the garment on a flat surface with kitchen paper beneath the affected section. Then use cotton wool or a white cloth to dab on the alcohol-and-detergent solution, working from the outside towards the centre of the stain so the ink transfers to the paper underneath. At this stage, follow this order:

  • Blot away excess ink with kitchen paper without rubbing.
  • Put paper or a white cloth under the stained area.
  • Apply the home remedy with light dabbing motions, from the outside inwards.
  • Replace the paper or cloth whenever it becomes stained.
  • Rinse with cold water at the end, then wash as usual.

How can you remove a dried pen stain?

If the stain has already dried, the method requires more care and patience. Thoroughly dampen only the stained area with the alcohol-and-detergent solution, then leave it to work for 5 to 10 minutes. Do not soak the entire garment if the material is particularly delicate.

Afterwards, repeat the dabbing process with cotton wool or a cloth, keeping kitchen paper underneath to absorb the ink as it lifts. Older stains may need several applications before the area becomes sufficiently lighter for washing with mild detergent.

Which precautions prevent damage to the fabric?

Although this is a simple option, using alcohol on light-coloured garments calls for particular care with silk, fine lace, very lightweight viscose and certain delicate knits. Check the garment label and test the mixture on a hidden corner, watching for any change in colour or texture after a few minutes.

It is also important to avoid hard brushes and forceful movements, which can “scratch” the fabric, particularly on thin T-shirts or formal shirts. The technique generally works better on light denim, twill and hard-wearing polyester. Drying the item in the shade helps prevent marks in the treated area, improving the chance of restoring the garment without visible damage.
