New analysis: bamboo toilet paper can emit more climate pollution than wood-based tissue

A fresh analysis suggests that, under today’s manufacturing conditions, bamboo toilet paper can generate more climate-warming emissions than standard wood-based tissue.

That result pushes back against the common assumption that bamboo rolls are automatically the greener option.

It also recasts what looks like a simple toiletries-aisle choice as something largely driven by factory energy sources, drying methods, and the hygiene routines people depend on day to day.

Counting the carbon cost

One analysis tracked toilet tissue from pulp mills through to disposal and tallied the resulting climate pollution. Following that chain, researcher Naycari Forfora at North Carolina State University (NC State) attributed most of the emissions to the fuel and electricity used at the mills.

Forfora estimated the difference at close to 500 pounds of climate-warming pollution per ton between wood tissue and bamboo blends (roughly 227 kg per tonne).

In real-world terms, what was printed on the wrapper mattered less than where the mill’s power came from and the way the paper was dried.

The coal factor

A large share of bamboo’s footprint, in the modelling, came from the energy required to cook the fibres and dry the sheets into soft tissue.

In the Chinese mills used to model bamboo pulp, coal provided a substantial portion of the heat and electricity.

Long transport distances contributed less than many people might assume, because the most polluting emissions occurred before the rolls were shipped anywhere.

With cleaner electricity grids and more efficient mills, the gap could shrink, which is why NC State treated bamboo’s overall result as strongly dependent on location.

Softness comes at a cost

In the analysis, the drive for extra softness often meant extra drying, and that stage mattered more than whether the fibre started as bamboo or wood.

Through-air drying (TDA) - a hot-air approach that dries the sheet without heavy contact - required far more electricity than the more common drum-drying method.

Under the same U.S. conditions, that premium drying choice increased climate emissions by about 39% compared with lower-energy tissue machines.

So for anyone buying the softest roll available, the environmental trade-off may be driven more by factory energy demand than by the type of plant fibre.

Bidets reduce paper use

Water-based cleaning tackles toilet paper’s main purpose by rinsing away residue rather than smearing it.

Bidets and bidet attachments have provided this approach for centuries, delivering a controlled stream to the right area and sending waste into the bowl.

A World Health Organization sanitary inspection form lists water alongside toilet paper as an option for anal cleansing.

That same guidance links cleaning choices to toilet design, meaning water tends to work best when the toilet system is set up to support it.

Drying stays essential

Even with a rinse, the skin remains wet, so any water-cleaning approach still needs a drying step that feels comfortable.

Toilet paper dries quickly because its fibres absorb moisture, but relying on single-use paper keeps the manufacturing footprint relevant.

Using reusable cloths or small towels can reduce paper consumption, and routine washing removes residues that could otherwise spread.

Dedicated, clearly labelled towels are important, because sharing a damp cloth can transfer germs between people in the same household.

Sewer system strain

Moist toilet wipes can feel like an easy solution, but many sewer networks effectively treat them as rubbish because they don’t break apart.

Unlike toilet paper, many wipes contain synthetic fibres that stay intact, catch grease, and form stubborn blockages in pipes.

German environmental authorities have warned that wet wipes are a poor substitute for toilet paper because they do not break down the same way in wastewater systems.

A “flushable” label doesn’t change how wipes behave in water, and the expense of blocked pipes and damaged pumps often ends up being paid by councils and homeowners.

Plumbing sets the limit

Whether a bidet is straightforward to use often comes down to available space and existing plumbing, particularly in older bathrooms with little room around the toilet.

Wall-mounted bidet sprayers and toilet-seat attachments can connect to the existing water supply line, offering control without major building work.

Travel bidets avoid tools and plumbing entirely: users fill a small bottle and squeeze water through a nozzle.

Cold water, low pressure, or ineffective cleaning habits can reduce the advantage, so many people still combine water with a small amount of paper.

Comfort and cost

Over time, buying less paper can cut household spending, and many people also prefer reduced rubbing after a bowel movement.

A basic bidet attachment involves an upfront cost, but it can function for years with only water and simple cleaning.

Online guides now present the idea as one of ten household life hacks, although building the daily habit still takes practice.

Once it becomes routine, households may start treating toilet paper as a back-up rather than the default tool every time.

A smarter eco label

Adverts often focus on the number of trees saved, yet the real climate calculation depends on electricity sources, fuels, and factory design.

A life cycle assessment - a complete account from raw fibre to disposal - prevents those less visible stages from being overlooked.

When weighing sustainability, the analysis indicates that manufacturing energy and drying technology can matter more than whether the fibre came from bamboo or trees.

Labels that clearly state production energy sources and the country of manufacture could help shoppers choose lower-impact options without needing specialist knowledge.

Practical choices at home

For many households, the most effective approach is a mix of water cleaning, mindful drying, and fewer disposable products, rather than simply switching from one roll to another.

As manufacturers reduce the carbon intensity of their energy supplies, policy and product claims will matter more - because in climate calculations, the same fibre can look very different depending on how it is made.
