Whiten Kitchen Towels with Sodium Percarbonate (Oxygen Bleach)

If you enjoy cooking, you’ll recognise the situation: the cupboard is packed with stained, slightly greasy-looking kitchen towels that never seem properly clean again, no matter how hot the wash is or how much bleach you add. The fabric turns dull, fibres start to break down, and the smell lingers. Yet there’s a well-known powder that often sits forgotten in the cleaning cupboard - and it can bring back the original whiteness far more effectively than standard chlorine bleach.

Why kitchen towels turn grey – even after a hot wash

Kitchen towels are true workhorses. They deal with everything a busy kitchen throws at them: grease, sauces, tomato splashes, coffee, tea, wine, egg and flour. It’s exactly this combination that creates the familiar grey film.

  • Fats and oils sink deep into cotton fibres.
  • Dyes and tannins from coffee, tea and red wine act like a faint stain over time.
  • Limescale from tap water coats the fibres and locks dirt particles into the weave.

With every wash, more residue builds up. The machine often removes only what sits on the surface. The result is a cloth that absorbs less, takes longer to dry and starts to smell musty much sooner. Reaching automatically for the hottest programme and plenty of bleach can, in many cases, make things worse.

Why conventional bleach ruins towels over time

Chlorine-based bleaches may make laundry look brighter at first, but they show their drawbacks with kitchen textiles:

  • They attack cotton fibres, leaving the towel stiff and prone to tearing.
  • They can introduce a yellow tinge rather than restoring a clean white.
  • They only partly deal with grease and protein residues - the underlying grime stays embedded in the fabric.

Another common mistake is putting towels with fresh, intense stains straight into a very hot cycle. Heat can effectively “cook” proteins and certain colourants into the fibres. Afterwards, the mark can look as if it has been fixed in place like a textile dye.

When the powder meets hot water, three key things happen:

  • It breaks down into washing soda (sodium carbonate) and hydrogen peroxide.
  • The washing soda cuts through grease, loosens old soap build-up and helps release limescale bonds.
  • The hydrogen peroxide releases active oxygen, which oxidises organic stains and brightens the fabric.

This reaction begins at around 40°C and reaches full effectiveness at about 60°C - ideal for sturdy cotton and linen towels.

Advantages over classic bleach

This powder has several features that make it particularly suitable for kitchen towels:

  • No yellowing: Light-coloured cotton stays clearer, and the familiar yellow haze is less likely.
  • Less fibre damage: The fabric is not attacked as aggressively as it is with chlorine bleach.
  • Odour neutralising: Musty, rancid smells are removed rather than merely masked.
  • Environmental profile: What remains is water, oxygen and washing soda - comparatively low-impact.

Important: use it only on robust materials such as cotton and linen. Wool, silk and very delicate dyes often do not tolerate this type of bleaching action.

How to make old kitchen towels white again: step-by-step

The real difference isn’t made by the standard wash alone, but by a purposeful pre-soak. This bath loosens the built-up grey film before the washing machine finishes the job.

The right pre-soak with sodium percarbonate

  1. Prepare hot water: Fill a large bowl or bucket with very hot water - at least 40°C, ideally close to 60°C.
  2. Measure the powder: Add about 1–2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate per litre of water, stirring well until most crystals have dissolved.
  3. Pre-treat fresh marks: For newer stains, lightly rub the towel under lukewarm water with a plain soap bar (traditional household soap).
  4. Submerge the towels: Fully immerse cotton or linen kitchen towels, ensuring everything is completely covered.
  5. Soak time: Leave for 2–6 hours depending on how dirty they are. For heavily greyed towels, leaving them overnight is acceptable.
  6. Wash as normal: Wring out briefly, then run a normal wash at a minimum of 40°C. Skip fabric conditioner so the towels keep their absorbency.
  7. Air-dry: Drying outdoors is best, ideally in sunlight - UV light supports the brightening effect.

You’ll often see the progress immediately in the soaking water: it turns noticeably cloudy, sometimes almost brownish - a sign that the built-up residues have been pulled out of the fibres.

What you should avoid doing

Even though the method is straightforward, a few clear no-gos matter:

  • Don’t simply tip the powder into a cold wash - very little will happen.
  • Don’t mix it with vinegar or lemon juice in a sealed container, as the reaction can produce gases.
  • Wear gloves when handling it, because the powder can irritate skin and mucous membranes.

Care routine: keeping kitchen towels fresher for longer

If you only do a “shock treatment” every few months, you’ll keep ending up back at the start. A handful of simple habits helps keep kitchen towels in good condition over the long term.

  • Change them often: Depending on use, a kitchen towel should go in the wash after 1–2 days.
  • Don’t leave them soaking wet: Let damp towels dry spread out, rather than scrunched up on an oven handle.
  • Wash hot regularly: If the fabric can handle it, wash at 60°C once a week.
  • Watch the grease-heavy jobs: For very oily tasks (deep-frying, roasting), use kitchen roll first before the towel gets involved.

Risks, limits and sensible combinations

As useful as sodium percarbonate is, it isn’t a limitless miracle product. Strongly coloured prints can fade over time, and delicate fabrics may distort or lose structure. With new towels in intense colours, it’s best to wash them separately first and without bleach to check how the dyes respond.

In homes with very hard water, adding a water softener or classic washing soda to the main wash can be worthwhile. Less limescale in the water means fewer deposits on the fibres - and it makes oxygen bleach work more consistently.

Day to day, a tiered approach pays off: use a solid heavy-duty detergent as your base in normal washes; for light yellowing, occasionally run oxygen bleach through the detergent drawer; and for truly “hopeless cases”, use the intensive pre-soak. That way you rarely need to replace kitchen towels, saving money over time - while also reducing textile waste.

Treat your towels more deliberately from now on and you’ll notice the difference quickly: the kitchen cupboard smells less sharp, your hands won’t be met with stiff, dull fabric when drying up, and guests will pick up on the small but clear improvement. A powder that’s often overlooked can make tired, greyed cloths look like fresh kitchen helpers again.
