Sodium-ion batteries
“Beeline” is looking into whether sodium-ion battery packs could be deployed at base stations and across other parts of its telecoms infrastructure. As CNews has learned, “VimpelCom” has commissioned a market study to benchmark sodium-ion batteries against conventional lithium-ion and lead-acid options, review the available suppliers and decide whether to proceed with pilot projects.
What the batteries would be used for in the network
The focus is on stationary back-up power batteries for network equipment. These systems are intended to keep base stations, data transmission nodes and other communications facilities running during interruptions to mains electricity supply. According to procurement documents, the operator is considering solutions with a high level of localisation and servicing in Russia. Pilot shipments could include up to 10 batteries, while wholesale lots could be up to 100.
Safety, resilience and operation in cold conditions
The key advantage of sodium-ion technology is improved safety and better tolerance of harsh operating conditions. According to RAS corresponding member Yevgeny Antipov, such batteries can withstand a complete discharge, long-term storage at zero charge and a short circuit, and they are not prone to thermal runaway. This, in turn, makes logistics and maintenance easier and reduces the requirements placed on the battery management system.
Sodium-ion batteries also bring important benefits for Russia’s climate: they remain operational in sub-zero temperatures and can be used more effectively in northern, Arctic and Far Eastern regions. At the same time, the technology still trails lithium-ion batteries in energy density, but it is a stronger fit for infrastructure tasks where safety, reliability and stable costs matter more.
Market context: other operators’ stance
“Beeline” could become one of the first operators in Russia to trial sodium-ion batteries in telecoms. “MegaFon” and T2 have said they are not currently planning to switch to this technology, while MTS declined to comment.
