What often goes unnoticed is that these colour shifts aren’t random. With a bit of basic soil knowledge-and one everyday kitchen leftover used wisely-you can nudge your plants towards vivid blue blooms.

Why hydrangeas change colour at all

Hydrangeas act like little mood indicators in the border. They respond strongly to what’s in the soil, and especially to the pH value. It may sound like a chemistry lesson, but it’s straightforward.

The pH value tells you whether soil is more acidic or more alkaline. Well-known garden specialists at the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK emphasise that this figure is exactly what determines whether a hydrangea tends towards blues or towards pinks.
