Sodium percarbonate: the active oxygen trick that revives grey kitchen towels

Anyone who enjoys cooking knows how it goes: after a few months, even good-quality tea towels start to look grey, slightly greasy and, frankly, not very hygienic. Detergents promise the world, often cost a fair bit-and the stains still won’t shift. Yet for many people the answer has been sitting in the cleaning cupboard all along: a plain white powder that does what “bleach” and similar products often only claim to do.

It’s sodium percarbonate-usually called simply “percarbonate” in everyday use. The name sounds like something from a chemistry lab, but the product itself is unremarkable: a white, slightly coarse powder, odourless and easy to overlook.

And yet it’s surprisingly powerful. Percarbonate is considered a solid form of hydrogen peroxide. When it meets sufficiently warm water, it releases what’s known as active oxygen-and that can do far more than just brighten fabric slightly.

Unlike chlorine-based bleaches, percarbonate is gentle on cotton fibres. It cleans thoroughly without turning fabrics yellow over time or making them brittle. What’s left behind is water, oxygen and washing soda-substances that are far less problematic for water systems and the environment than many modern specialist cleaners.

Why ordinary detergents often fail on kitchen towels

Kitchen towels take a real battering: grease, egg, tomato sauce, coffee, tea, red wine-plus germs from handling raw foods. Traditional heavy-duty detergents often manage the smell, but that dull grey film can remain.

There are several reasons for this:

  • Grease and proteins work their way deep into the fibres.
  • Hard water leaves limescale behind, which makes the greying look worse.
  • Many wash cycles now run at 30 or 40 °C to save energy.
  • Optical brighteners only fool the eye; they don’t clean the fibre.

Percarbonate tackles the problem at source: it chemically breaks down the colour-forming components of stains rather than covering them up. The result is closer to a proper “refurbishment” of the textiles than a cosmetic touch-up.

How the oxygen boost works - temperature makes the difference

A common mistake is tipping the powder into a 30 °C wash and hoping it will “help out somehow”. In lukewarm water, percarbonate remains largely inactive.

You can’t see the reaction, but it’s highly effective: the released oxygen oxidises organic residues-fats, sauce pigments, and the tannins from tea and coffee. At the same time, the combination of heat and oxygen acts like a mini hygiene cycle for the fabric. For tea towels that frequently come into contact with food, that’s a clear advantage.

If you wash only at 30 °C, you’re giving up almost all of that potential. A small tweak to your routine pays off: either use a separate hot soak, or run a regular boil-wash/60 °C programme so percarbonate can work at full strength.

The “miracle soak” for grey, stained kitchen towels

For heavily soiled towels, a pre-soak is far more effective than adding a small amount straight into the drum. The approach is simple, but it does require a bit of time.

Step-by-step guide to an oxygen soak

  • Fill a heat-resistant bowl, tub or bucket with very hot water (at least 40 °C; for cotton, 60 °C is better).
  • Stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of percarbonate per litre of water until the granules have fully dissolved.
  • Put the dirty kitchen towels straight into the solution, submerge them completely and move them around a little.
  • Leave to soak for 2 to 6 hours depending on how dirty they are-overnight in extreme cases.
  • Then wring out lightly and wash in the machine as usual.

Dried-on tomato sauce, rings from red wine, or dark coffee and tea stains come out noticeably better this way than with detergent alone. Many people report that after such a soak, tea towels look as if they’ve just been bought-even if they’ve been in use for years.

When percarbonate is off-limits and where caution is needed

As useful as the powder is, it isn’t suitable for every fibre. Animal-based materials are particularly sensitive:

  • wool
  • silk
  • cashmere and similar blends

Here, the combination of an alkaline solution and oxidation can damage the fibre structure. The result can be roughness, felting or even brittleness. Percarbonate can also lighten printed fabrics if the dye isn’t colourfast.

If you’re unsure, test a small, hidden area first. If the colour fades quickly, it’s better to stick with a standard delicate detergent.

Making it safe and practical at home

Even though percarbonate is often viewed as a “greener” option, it shouldn’t be handled carelessly. In concentrated form, the powder can irritate skin and eyes.

Practical household rules:

  • Wear household gloves when measuring and stirring.
  • Avoid breathing in the powder-don’t let it dust around.
  • Don’t mix it with acids such as vinegar in sealed containers-gas can build up and create pressure.
  • Keep it away from children and pets.

Follow these points and percarbonate becomes a reliable, highly effective product to keep in the cupboard-often replacing a range of specialist cleaners.

Percarbonate performs especially well where water is hard. Many products already contain small amounts of it; using it separately lets you match the dose to how dirty the laundry is-which can, in some cases, save money on expensive specialist detergents.

Why a small stash in the cleaning cupboard is worth it

Sodium percarbonate isn’t only useful for kitchen towels. Many people also use it for:

  • greyed bed linen
  • white cotton T-shirts with deodorant marks
  • dishcloths and microfibre cloths (follow the manufacturer’s guidance)
  • cotton nappies and flannels

Because the powder keeps for a long time when dry, a medium-sized bag often lasts for months. Storing it in an airtight container makes sense, so moisture in the air doesn’t trigger the reaction prematurely.

If you’re new to percarbonate, start with a small dose and work up gradually until you find the right amount. Using too much doesn’t add extra benefit, but the correct dose can make a surprising difference to older textiles.

What terms like “active oxygen” actually mean

Many detergents advertise “active oxygen” in big letters without explaining it. In essence, it’s usually the same mechanism as percarbonate: when it meets water, oxygen compounds form that attack stain components.

The difference is control. When you use pure percarbonate, you know exactly how much is going into the wash liquor and you can deliberately choose the temperature and soaking time. That makes the method transparent and predictable-and helps explain why so many households stick with it after the first try.
