At home, shower doors rarely stay looking as pristine as they do elsewhere.

Behind the always-clear, streak-free glass you notice in so many hotels sits a surprisingly basic routine. There’s no miracle spray and no industrial-strength detergent-just a small, unobtrusive tool that lifts away limescale, soap scum and those dull white patches.

Why shower doors look cloudy so quickly

Shower screens take a daily battering. Hot water, steam, shampoo and hard tap water all leave something behind. Little by little, a thin layer builds on glass or acrylic until it starts to look milky and worn.

The main culprits are twofold: limescale from hard water and soap residue that sticks, dries and turns crusty. Together, they hold on to grime and body oils, leaving the surface looking greasy and marked.

A fast once-over with a sponge or a typical bathroom spray often just moves the film around. While everything is wet it can seem improved, but once it dries the marks show again-and the panel still doesn’t look properly transparent.

What melamine foam actually does

Melamine foam is a firm polymer that’s been expanded into an ultra-fine, open-cell material. It resembles an ordinary white sponge, but under magnification its surface behaves more like extremely fine sandpaper.

Once damp, the foam softens just enough to slide smoothly, while its micro-structure grips limescale, soap scum and greasy films. Rather than chemically dissolving the build-up, you’re lightly removing it from the surface.

  • Work over the glass or plastic using small circular movements, concentrating on white streaks and dull, matte areas.
  • Rinse again to remove the residue the sponge has loosened.
  • Finish by drying with a microfibre cloth or a squeegee to avoid streaks.

The same sponge can be used-still with just water-on taps, shower heads and soap dishes. When the foam starts breaking down and thinning, discard it and grab a fresh one.

Because melamine foam acts as a fine abrasive, it’s brilliant on some finishes and too harsh on others. Knowing what to target-and what to avoid-matters.

In bathrooms, it usually performs strongly on:

  • Standard or untreated shower glass panels
  • Acrylic or plastic shower walls and trays
  • Ceramic tiles and grout lines with soap scum
  • Chrome taps and shower heads with light limescale
  • Mirrors with fingerprints and dried splashes

Start with a small test in an inconspicuous spot. If the finish turns dull or hazy and it doesn’t rinse away, stop and move to a gentler option.

Surfaces that need extra care

Some coatings are far softer, and the micro-abrasion can leave permanent clouding:

  • Anti-limescale coated glass or “self-cleaning” glass
  • High-gloss acrylic baths and basins
  • Delicate plastic screens with a very shiny finish
  • Natural stone such as marble or limestone

Limescale is largely calcium carbonate left behind when hard water evaporates. Soap scum is a blend of soap, skin oils and minerals. Together they create a slightly rough layer that can hold bacteria and mould spores-one reason some panels feel a bit “grippy” when you run a finger over them.
