Ceiling fan: far from the “poor man’s air con”

For years, the ceiling fan (also known as a ceiling air circulator) has been dismissed as the “poor man’s air con”, even though it actually comes with plenty of advantages.

There was a time when summers drifted by to the steady whirr of ceiling fans. Those spinning blades-fixed to childhood memories-set the pace for stifling afternoons and air‑conditioning‑free evenings. Their gentle airflow filled the quiet, the post‑lunch naps, and even now they still conjure up a calmer era, when time seemed to stand still… just like they did, hanging from the ceiling. Yet beyond the nostalgic appeal, the ceiling fan remains a genuinely effective option.

The French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) is unequivocal: “There are solutions for keeping your home cool. Air conditioning isn’t always essential.” Among the agency’s recommendations are closing shutters as soon as the sun hits the windows, shutting those windows from mid‑morning onwards, and avoiding appliances that generate heat (the oven in particular).

ADEME also advises using fans which, even if they do not actually cool a room, keep air moving and create a pleasant cooling sensation on the skin. With heatwave conditions taking hold in France, the agency could well help bring ceiling fans (or ceiling air circulators) back into fashion.

How a ceiling fan improves comfort in hot weather

According to some specialists, a ceiling fan can move cooler air around the room with its blades and deliver a gain of around 5°C in perceived temperature. The other good news is that this is a particularly energy‑efficient solution. “An air circulator uses 25 to 40 times less electricity than air con, for a level of comfort that can be comparable,” says Robert Célaire, a bioclimatic engineer.

Cost, installation constraints, and other benefits

Upfront costs are lower too. Recently, in the Lyon suburbs (in Vénissieux), the local authority installed 150 ceiling fans across roughly thirty buildings, for €90,000. The airflow they generate helps the body shed heat through the skin by stimulating evapotranspiration; in other words, it changes how hot a person feels, even if it does not lower the temperature shown on a thermometer.

Ceiling fans are estimated to be present in 2.5% of homes in France, compared with more than 60% in the United States. Installing them in homes can, however, run into a very practical constraint: ceiling height. In houses and flats, this is typically limited to 2.50 metres, and it is recommended to keep 2.30 metres between the floor and the blades. It is also worth noting that if you have neither air conditioning nor a ceiling fan, you can still fight the heat by using… ice cubes.

Finally, a ceiling fan can also help against mosquitoes, which struggle to fly properly in moving air. And the system may be eligible for MaPrimeRénov’, although only under certain conditions. Not so old‑fashioned after all, is it?
