MDF Cupboards vs Expanded PVC: What Works Best in Humid Kitchens

MDF cupboards still feature in plenty of fitted kitchens, but they have fallen out of favour in spots exposed to steam, splashes and ongoing damp. Expanded PVC has become an alternative for units near the sink, integrated utility areas and compact kitchens, because it does not take on water in the way wood-fibre boards do and it will not swell when it comes into contact with moisture.

Why do MDF cupboards struggle so much in the kitchen?

MDF cupboards are made from compressed wood fibres bonded with resins, which helps deliver a smooth face and a neat finish for paint, laminate and routed doors. The trouble starts when water gets in through exposed edges, hinge holes or poorly sealed sections around the sink.

Once moisture reaches the centre of the board, MDF can swell, lose its alignment and split at the ends. In kitchens with leaks, frequent steam or cleaning with an overly wet cloth, this kind of damage usually shows up first on plinths, lower doors and side panels close to the bowl.

Which material is replacing MDF in cupboards?

Expanded PVC is one of the materials being used to replace MDF cupboards in designs where water resistance is a priority. It is a lightweight, rigid, waterproof plastic sheet used for doors, open niches, base units and other zones where traditional joinery would be more likely to swell.

In day-to-day use, the material stands out for a few key reasons:

  • It does not absorb water like wood-based panels.
  • It copes better with steam, splashes and regular cleaning.
  • It has a smooth surface that is easy to wipe down with a damp cloth.
  • It does not rust, suffer woodworm, or rot due to moisture.
  • It can be finished in light tones, bold colours or wood-effect looks.

Why doesn’t expanded PVC swell with moisture?

Expanded PVC has no plant-fibre core, so water does not penetrate the panel structure in the same way it can with MDF cupboards. In damp kitchens, that difference helps limit warping, puffed-up edges and bowed doors after occasional contact with water.

Even so, the fitting work still needs to be done properly. Screws, hinges, edging, trims and support points must suit the door size and weight, because cupboard performance depends on the full system, not just the sheet material.

How do you choose the right model for the kitchen?

When choosing expanded PVC, consider thickness, finish, hardware and where the unit will sit. For base units, where contact with water is more likely, it is worth prioritising thicker panels, secure hinge fixing and a plinth that can handle frequent floor cleaning.

Before replacing MDF cupboards, check these design points:

  • Use expanded PVC in areas near the sink, dishwasher and utility zone.
  • Pick a thickness that suits larger doors to reduce flex.
  • Choose good-quality hinges and fittings to keep doors aligned.
  • Make sure the finish works with the worktop, wall coverings and handles.
  • Avoid very wide modules unless they include internal reinforcement or supporting rails.

Can you swap them without refurbishing the whole kitchen?

In many kitchens, you can make the change in stages. It is often possible to keep upper units that are still sound and replace only doors, plinths or damaged base modules-particularly where the issue is concentrated around the sink or in areas that have already been affected by leaks.

Expanded PVC typically costs more than standard MDF, but in damp environments it can be worthwhile because it lowers the chance of swelling and repeated replacements. If you want to keep the existing kitchen, the most practical approach is to assess the current cabinetry, replace the vulnerable sections, and use proper sealing on edges, hardware points and the junctions with the worktop.
