Wooden implements from the far reaches of human history often share a familiar, practical scale: sized to sit naturally in the palm. Archaeologists have uncovered enough of them to see that consistent, hand-friendly pattern.
Now, a site in Greece has produced two carved wooden pieces dated to 430,000 years ago. One is a digging stick, its surface worn by repeated use along a lakeshore. The other is so diminutive that it could only sensibly have been pinched and guided between the fingers.
Wooden tools rarely last
For wood to endure for hundreds of thousands of years, conditions have to be exceptional. It must remain waterlogged and cut off from oxygen, which is why almost everything early humans carved from timber has disappeared from the archaeological record.
That absence has been a longstanding irritation for researchers. Stone preserves well: we can study sharp edges and struck flakes. Yet the more everyday wooden kit-digging sticks, handles, and other routine gear-hardly ever survives. Any site that protects wooden material quickly becomes invaluable.
The discovery comes from the Megalopolis Basin, in the central Peloponnese of southern Greece. There, saturated sediments low in oxygen provided precisely what ancient wood requires to survive: isolation from the processes that normally cause it to decay.
Greece’s oldest tools
At a locality known as Marathousa 1, an international team analysed 144 pieces of preserved wood recovered from the deposits. Most fragments showed no notable modification. Two pieces did-and those two now stand as the oldest hand-held wooden tools yet identified.
The work was co-led by Katerina Harvati, a specialist in human evolution at the University of Tübingen (Uni Tübingen) in Germany, and Annemieke Milks of the University of Reading in England. Their team inspected each fragment under microscopes.
They were looking for traces that could not plausibly be produced by natural forces. The larger item, fashioned from a portion of alder, bears unmistakable evidence of chopping and carving, as well as wear consistent with repeated use. The researchers interpret it as a tool for digging in soft soil at the edge of the lake.
A longer history
Before this discovery, the earliest known hand-held wooden tools came from later sites spread across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Greek finds push that record back by at least 40,000 years-a substantial interval in terms of human evolution.
There is, however, an older example of worked wood from Zambia dated to roughly 476,000 years ago. That object was architectural in nature-two logs cut and notched so they fit together-rather than something made to be carried and used by hand.
That difference matters. A digging stick suggests intent: someone identified suitable wood, shaped it to be held and used, and brought it to where the work needed doing. It is planning made physical, and it places such behaviour further back in time than had previously been confirmed.
The stranger wooden tool
The second piece is what makes the find truly unusual. It is a very small object made from willow or poplar, also carved and perhaps smoothed by use, and it is far too tiny to be clenched in a fist.
The team proposes it was controlled between the fingers rather than gripped with the whole hand. A wooden tool of this minute scale has not been documented from this period before. It may have supported fine, close-up tasks involved in making stone tools, although its exact function remains unclear.
This aspect of the study is likely to draw the most interest. Evidence that early humans used digging sticks aligns with what many researchers already expected.
A finger-held wooden implement-exceptionally small for its age-goes beyond that. It opens up a possibility that had not previously been recognised.
A dangerous lakeshore
The wooden artefacts were found alongside more than just timber. They occurred with stone flakes, bone tools, and butchered remains of straight-tusked elephants. The lakeside setting appears to have been a place where people processed large prey.
A third piece of alder revealed a more troubling detail. It also showed deep grooves, but close analysis indicated they were made by the claws of a large carnivore-possibly a bear-rather than by human activity.
Harvati interprets that overlap as evidence of competition. Humans and large predators were attracted to the same carcasses at the same lakeshore, and the marks left on wood and bone imply their encounters were frequent.
Looking beyond stone
For many years, reconstructions of early woodworking rested largely on inference. Researchers reasoned that early humans must have worked wood routinely-because people do so today-but the material evidence repeatedly rotted away before it could be examined.
These artefacts shift what can be stated with certainty rather than assumed. At last, there is direct evidence.
In other words, humans were carving and using hand-held wooden tools 430,000 years ago, with woodworking that ranged from robust digging implements to a delicate piece apparently designed for finger control.
The next change may be in how archaeologists search. Knowing that tiny wooden tools existed-and that they can survive-means that small scraps of ancient waterlogged wood once dismissed may deserve fresh scrutiny. Each saturated fragment should be approached as a potential artefact.
The people behind the Stone Age label begin to look less like brute users of rock and more like adaptable, inventive makers.
