Why Fabric Softener on Towels Can Make Them Less Absorbent

Using fabric softener on towels may seem the obvious way to keep them soft, yet its effect can become the opposite after repeated washes. Many softeners coat fibres with lubricating compounds to create a smooth feel, but this build-up can make the fabric heavier and less absorbent. Keeping towels fluffy also depends on detergent dosage, thorough rinsing and, above all, proper drying.

Why can fabric softener damage towels?

Cotton fibres must be able to take in water quickly when they touch the skin. Fabric softener works by leaving substances on the outside of those fibres, initially making them feel softer and reducing static electricity. On towels, however, repeated use can create deposits that impair the very absorbency they need.

This issue usually develops gradually rather than appearing after a single wash.

  • The material can start to feel heavy or waxy;
  • Deposits may also prevent a fully effective rinse;

Can too much detergent make towels stiff as well?

Yes. Adding more detergent than required does not result in cleaner washing. If the amount exceeds what the machine can rinse away, some product may remain trapped in the fibres. Over several washes, this build-up can cause towels to feel rough and rigid, particularly in hard-water areas with a higher mineral content.

How should you wash towels to protect softness and absorbency?

Start by following the recommended detergent dose and avoid overfilling the drum. Towels require enough room to move around, take in water and rinse properly. Temperature should also follow the care-label instructions, as excessive heat can wear down certain fibres and finishes.

Where a substantial amount of residue has accumulated, an extra rinse may be more helpful than adding another fragranced product.

  • Do not pack the washing machine too full;
  • Use no more detergent than needed;
  • Avoid fabric softener, or use it very sparingly;
  • Select a cycle suited to the fabric;
  • Run an additional rinse if there are signs of residue;
  • Take towels out of the machine as soon as the cycle ends.

Can vinegar replace fabric softener in every wash?

White vinegar is often suggested as a household alternative because its acidity may help release some mineral and detergent deposits from fabrics. Using a small amount occasionally can be useful in some situations, but it does not need to be added to every wash. The washing machine manufacturer's guidance should take priority, since frequent use of acidic substances may not be suitable for every component.

  • Never mix vinegar directly with bleach;
  • Use only small quantities if choosing this method;
  • Check the machine guidance before using it regularly;
  • Do not expect vinegar to restore fibres that are already severely worn;
  • First focus on the correct detergent dose and efficient rinsing.

Drying towels matters as much as what goes into the machine

Even thoroughly washed towels can become stiff if they dry slowly, are left in a pile or spend too long in intense heat. Shaking each item before hanging it up helps loosen the fibres, while leaving space between towels improves air circulation. In a tumble dryer, mechanical movement generally helps produce a fluffier texture, provided the temperature suits the fabric and the item is not left overheating once dry.

To keep towels soft and absorbent, removing fabric softener is only one part of the answer. A modest detergent dose, complete rinsing, sufficient space in the machine and correct drying prevent residue and compacted fibres from turning an originally soft towel into a rough fabric. The aim is not to keep adding more products to the wash, but to let the cotton finish the process clean, properly rinsed and with fibres free to absorb water again.
